The Constitutional Legacy of Justice Robert Jackson

December 8 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The Robert H. Jackson Center is proud to co-sponsor an America's Town Hall at the National Constitution Center.

About the Program

Join leading scholars of Robert H. Jackson’s life and jurisprudence for an in-depth conversation on one of the most consequential Supreme Court opinions on presidential power. John Q. Barrett, discoverer and editor of That Man: An Insider’s Portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt and author of The Jackson List, is joined by constitutional scholar Gerard Magliocca, author of The Actual Art of Governing: Justice Robert H. Jackson's Concurring Opinion in the Steel Seizure Case, and historian G. Edward White, author of Robert H. Jackson: A Life in Judgment. Together, they explore Jackson’s influential concurrence in Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer, his philosophy of constitutional interpretation, and his enduring impact on modern debates over executive power. The conversation is moderated by Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center.

This program also offers an early preview of the Robert H. Jackson Center’s upcoming 2026 events, when both Magliocca and White will join us in person for special programs examining Jackson’s legacy.

The Robert H. Jackson Center is a non-profit, non-partisan educational organization that is dedicated to presenting accurate and balanced information about complex issues. The opinions expressed by various guest speakers, panelists, and authors do not necessarily reflect the views of the Center, its Board, and supporters.

The Center fulfills its educational mission by welcoming diverse views and by providing a forum to explore a wide range of perspectives on often controversial legal and public policy issues. Since 2001, the Robert H. Jackson Center has preserved the values embodied in the life and works of Robert H. Jackson, who served as U.S. Solicitor General, U.S. Attorney General, U.S. Supreme Court Justice, and Chief U.S. Prosecutor of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. Through programs, presentations, exhibits, media, internships, and scholarship, the Center seeks to demonstrate to current and future generations the relevance and applicability of Justice Jackson’s ideas and writings. The Center provides educational content on the United States Constitution and Supreme Court, civil rights, the legacy of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg and international human rights, and the rule of law. During his illustrious career, Justice Jackson addressed these subjects, and the Center recognizes his thinking remains relevant today.
