Justice for Ukraine and the 1934 Trial: Rise of Hitlerism

April 28, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Friday, April 28 at 12 pm ET

Robert H. Jackson Center's Cappa Theater

and online via Zoom

Please join us as David Crane, former Chief Prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone, joins a live audience by Zoom to discuss the preparation for the current case against President Vladimir Putin.

This contemporary conversation calls to mind that contemplating prosecution of war crimes and crimes against humanity early in a conflict is not unprecedented, and practice trials are often used to crystallize arguments for future use.

Years before World War II the American Jewish Congress organized a unique protest attended by 20,000 people in Madison Square Garden, in which former Secretary of State and Bemus Point resident, Bainbridge Colby, presided as judge in a mock trial, weighing Adolf Hitler's guilt in crimes against civilization.

In addition to Mr. Crane's informative perspectives, our event will also observe the 90 years since that prescient protest. Five transcript excerpt readings and contemporaneous news reports will be read by guest speakers Senator George Borello, Assemblyman Andrew Goodell, Jamestown Mayor Eddie Sundquist, Judge John Ward and WJTN Announcer, Dennis Webster.
