For months, this community has explored the Nuremberg Trials from different perspectives, examining the path to the trials, the people and institutions involved, the courtroom itself, the evidence and testimony, the role of Robert H. Jackson, and the continuing legacy of Nuremberg. Now, we bring the series together.
After Nuremberg: What Do We Carry Forward? is a community conversation reflecting on what we have learned and how our understanding of Nuremberg may have changed through the series. Rather than introducing another historical topic, this final program creates space for participants to consider the larger questions Nuremberg raises about justice, accountability, responsibility, memory, and the rule of law.
What surprised us? What challenged our assumptions? How did hearing different perspectives change the way we understand the trials and their legacy? And, perhaps most importantly, what does Nuremberg ask of us today?
The conversation will invite audience members to reflect on the series as a whole and connect the history of Nuremberg to the responsibilities of individuals, institutions, and communities in the present.
The program will conclude with a special video featuring several voices reading the opening page of Robert H. Jackson’s closing statement at Nuremberg. Hearing Jackson’s words through multiple voices will offer a final reflection on the enduring questions at the heart of the series, and leave the community with one final question: What do we carry forward?

Jackson, who served as U.S. Solicitor General, U.S. Attorney General, U.S. Supreme Court Justice, and Chief U.S. Prosecutor of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. Through programs, presentations, exhibits, media, internships, and scholarship, the Center seeks to demonstrate to current and future generations the relevance and applicability of Justice Jackson’s ideas and writings. The Center provides educational content on the United States Constitution and Supreme Court, civil rights, the legacy of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg and international human rights, and the rule of law. During his illustrious career, Justice Jackson addressed these subjects, and the Center recognizes his thinking remains relevant today.
