On Friday, September 19, 2025, the Robert H. Jackson Center welcomed community members, educators, and students for our annual Constitution Day program. This year’s program featured Dr. Lindsey Cormack, author of How to Raise a Citizen (And Why It’s Up to You to Do It) and Director of the Diplomacy Lab at Stevens Institute of Technology.

Constitution Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787, a moment that laid the foundation for American democracy. Each year, the Jackson Center uses this occasion to not only honor that history but also to consider what citizenship means in today’s world.
In her presentation, Dr. Cormack explored the evolving responsibilities of citizenship in the 21st century, emphasizing that civic engagement is not just a right but a practice that must be nurtured. Drawing from her extensive research on political communication and civic education, she discussed:
Her talk encouraged attendees to see citizenship as an active role, one that requires ongoing learning, dialogue, and action.
We are grateful to Dr. Cormack for sharing her expertise and perspective, and to our generous donors and sponsors, like the Randall J. Sweeney Education Fund at the Chautauqua Regional Community Foundation, for making this program free and open to the public.
At the Robert H. Jackson Center, we remain committed to creating opportunities for reflection and dialogue that deepen our understanding of democracy, justice, and citizenship.
