Carlotta Walls LaNier is coming to Jamestown, NY! She will discuss her book, “A Mighty Long Way, My Journey to Justice at Little Rock Central High School“, based on her life as she and 8 other African-American students integrated Little Rock Central High School during the late 1950’s.
Only fourteen years old, Carlotta faced racism, discrimination, and prejudice as she walked the halls and entered the classrooms of Central High. Outside school, she and her family experienced the hardships and terror associated with attempts to desegregate public schools after the Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954). As Carlotta accepted her diploma at graduation, she remembered all of those brave classmates who started the challenge of integration with her.
This program is intended for middle and high school students. It is especially applicable for those who use Ms. LaNier’s book as part of the Common Core Standards included in the New York State curriculum. All students in grades 7 through 10 are encouraged to attend. Teachers are encouraged to read aloud (or assign the reading of) Ms. LaNier’s book to their classes.
