Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice

Phillip Hoose will concentrate his presentation on his books, Claudette Colvin, Twice Toward Justice and We Were There, Too! Young People in U.S. History. Claudette Colvin was a pioneer of civil rights when, at age 15, she refused to give up her bus seat to a white person in Alabama, fifteen months before Rosa Parks refused to do the same. This novel won the Newbery Honor and National book Awards, and is recommended for grades 7 and up. Mr. Hoose’s We Were There, Too! is a compilation of over seventy stories, including that of Claudette Colvin, noting young people who made differences in the outcome of U.S. history. This book won many awards including National Book Award Finalist, and is recommended for grades 6 and up.
