Daniel A Bellemare MSM, Q.C. currently serves as the Prosecutor of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL). As Prosecutor for the STL, Mr. Bellemare is responsible for overseeing the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the deadly attack against former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Prior to his appointment to the STL, Mr. Bellemare served as Commissioner of the United Nations International Independent Investigation Commission (UNIIC) from January 2008 until February 2009.

Born in 1952, Mr. Bellemare has had a long and distinguished legal career in Canada, serving as the Special Advisor to the Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Attorney General of Canada from 2006-2007, and as Assistant Deputy Attorney General from 1993 until 2006. His thirteen year tenure as Assistant Deputy Attorney General has earned him recognition as the longest standing holder of that position within Canada. In 2008, the Quebec Bar Association awarded Mr. Bellemare the honorific title of "Advocatus Emeritus (Ad.E.)" in recognition of his professional excellence and outstanding contribution to the legal profession.

Mr. Bellemare earned his Law degree from the University of Ottawa and a Master degree in Law from the University of Montreal. In addition to his legal services, he has published numerous articles in Canadian academic journals and has also written three books.
