“That four great nations, flushed with victory and stung with injury stay the hand of vengeance and voluntarily submit their captive enemies to the judgment of the law is one of the most significant tributes that Power has ever paid to Reason.” — from Jackson's Opening Statement before the International Military Tribunal

International Leader and Law School Dean to be at Jackson Center

Press Release
October 18, 2002

Gregory Peterson, President of the Robert H. Jackson Center, announced today that Mr. Phil C. Neal, a nationally-prominent attorney and former law school dean, would be attending a convocation of former law clerks of Justice Jackson on Wednesday, October 23rd.

“We are pleased”, Mr. Peterson said, “that Phil Neal has agreed to come and be a part of this important symposium. Following his work as a Jackson Law Clerk in 1943 and 1944, Mr. Neal left to become a part of the United States team which helped establish the United Nations. After working for Justice Jackson, Mr. Neal was assigned to the United States Department of State and spent the Spring of 1945 helping organize the Conference in San Francisco where the United Nations organization was founded. Following this important work, Phil Neal left government and became a law professor at Stanford Law School in California. Subsequently, he moved on to Chicago where he became Dean of the University of Chicago Law School. To have the opportunity to meet and listen to a man with Phil Neal’s experience and credentials, is truly a rare and unique opportunity for those of us associated with the Robert H. Jackson Center,” Mr. Peterson concluded.

Phil Neal will be participating in a roundtable discussion facilitated by John Q. Barrett, Elizabeth Lenna Fellow at the Jackson Center, entitled: “Reflections on Justice Robert Jackson”, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in the Carl Cappa Theater at the Center. He will also be honored with the other participating Law Clerks at a dinner at the Athenaeum Hotel at Chautauqua that evening. He will be joined by his fellow Jackson Law Clerks: Murray Gartner, James Marsh and Howard Buschman Jr. The public is invited to both events. Reservations are necessary for the evening event and can be made by calling the Jackson Center at 483-6646.
