“That four great nations, flushed with victory and stung with injury stay the hand of vengeance and voluntarily submit their captive enemies to the judgment of the law is one of the most significant tributes that Power has ever paid to Reason.” — from Jackson's Opening Statement before the International Military Tribunal

The Robert H. Jackson Center will host two Law Day programs for middle school pupils on Wednesday, May 4.

Teachers of fifth-, sixth- and seventh-grade pupils are asked to call the Jackson Center at 483-6646 to reserve seats at either the 8:45 or 10 a.m. programs. There is no charge for the program.

Law Day will honor the late John Sember, one of the Jackson Center’s most dedicated volunteers. He was a former middle school social studies teacher in Jamestown and was in charge of the center’s annual Law Day program and its intern research program. He was in the middle of planning the third annual Law Day program when he died in February.

‘‘We are fortunate that John’s work on behalf of schoolchildren will continue as part of John’s legacy,’’ said Rolland E. Kidder, Jackson Center executive director. ‘‘Former teacher Bob Terrebery has taken over the leadership of the Jackson Center Law Day, which we have renamed ‘John Sember Day.’ ’’

Terreberry is directing students in a play based on a law trial in which jurors will be selected from the audience to actually determine the outcome of the trial. The Honorable Joseph C. Gerace will preside as judge. Local attorneys Gregory Edwards and Kenneth Lasker will participate as attorneys in the trial. Students will play all other roles.

In addition to the presentation, Jamestown Bar Association members are available to visit classrooms to discuss law-related education with students. Teachers interested in participating in the program or in arranging for a local attorney to appear in classrooms should contact the Jackson Center at 483-6646.

The Jackson Center and the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation have established an endowed fund in Sember’s name at the foundation to support youth education programs at the Jackson Center. Gifts for the fund may be made by contacting Rebecca Robbins, Jackson Center development director, at 483- 6646, or by mail to the Robert H. Jackson Center, P.O. Box 879, Jamestown, N.Y., 14702-0879.
