“That four great nations, flushed with victory and stung with injury stay the hand of vengeance and voluntarily submit their captive enemies to the judgment of the law is one of the most significant tributes that Power has ever paid to Reason.” — from Jackson's Opening Statement before the International Military Tribunal

Professor John Q. Barrett to Introduce Chief Justice Rehnquist

Greg Peterson, President of the Robert H. Jackson Center, announced today that Professor John Q. Barrett of St. John’s University School of Law and the Elizabeth Lenna Fellow at the Jackson Center would be introducing Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist when we speaks at the Center’s dedication on May 16th.

“We are delighted”, Mr. Peterson said, “that John Barrett will be with us on this very important occasion. Since the Robert H. Jackson Center was started two years ago, Mr. Barrett has become an integral part of our growth and mission. He is an exceptionally able scholar and is probably the most knowledgeable person in academia today on the life and legacy of Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson. Combined with his experience and knowledge of the federal judiciary, Professor Barrett is the logical person to introduce the Chief Justice of the United States at this very significant event.”

Professor John Q. Barrett, a graduate of Georgetown University and Harvard Law School, was from 1986-1988, a law clerk to Judge A. Leon Higginbotham, Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia; and from 1988-93 was Associate Counsel in the Office of Independent Counsel Lawrence E. Walsh during the Iran/Contra Investigation. He is editing a previously unpublished book written by Robert H. Jackson entitled "That Man" about Jackson’s experiences in the Roosevelt administration which will be published later this year. In addition, Professor Barrett is writing a biography of Justice Jackson centered on his work at Nuremberg at the end of World War II. Barrett is also scheduled to be the morning lecturer at Chautauqua Institution on July 23rd during a week of activities focused on the theme “Security and Justice”.
