Persico To Appear At
Jackson Center
One
of several community events sponsored by the Robert H. Jackson Center is the
Monday, June 12 appearance of Joseph Persico at the center, 305 E. Fourth St.,
Jamestown.
Copies
of PersicoÕs book, Nuremberg: Infamy on Trial, are available to the community at a reduced cost and
can be read before PersicoÕs appearance. He will speak free of charge at 12:30
p.m. June 12. PersicoÕs book is the basis for the TNT movie, Nuremberg, starring Alec Baldwin as Justice Robert H. Jackson,
chief American prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trial of top Nazi leaders.
Barbi
Price, Jamestown High School teacher, is helping organize a ÔÔcommunity readÕÕ
of the book as volunteer coordinator of the project.

fairly accurate portrayal of Jackson at Nuremberg,ÕÕ Mrs. Price said. ÔÔIt is
written in a straight-forward, easy-to-read style. The principal characters of
the trial are developed and brought to life in a fascinating way. The book is
appropriate for high school and adult readers.ÕÕ
The
books are available at the Jackson Center for $5.42. The Center is open from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Arrangements to buy the book at other
times may be made by calling the center at 483-6646.

The New York Council for
the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities,
is giving the Jackson Center money to help pay for PersicoÕs appearance.
Persico began his political
writing career serving New York Govs. Averill Harriman and Nelson A.
Rockefeller. He went on to Washington as chief speechwriter for Rockefeller
when he was tapped as vice president under President Gerald Ford.
Persico is well known for
his historical books, including Colin PowellÕs autobiography, My American
Journey. He has
written extensively about Franklin D. Roosevelt, Nazi Germany, World War II,
World War I, the CIA and the Roosevelt family. A graduate from the State
University of New York at Albany, he received his bachelors and doctoral
degrees from that institution and lives in the Albany area.
Matching funds to the New
York Council for the Humanities grant have been made to the Jackson Center by
the Holmberg Foundation, the Robert S. Maytum, Sr./Valley of Jamestown A.A.S.R.
Fund of the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation and Harris Beach Attorneys.
Additional matching gifts have been made by the DFT Communications Community
Betterment Fund of the Northern Chautauqua
Community
Foundation, Evans-Alfies Restaurant Inc., Robowash, Summit Financial Advisors
LLC, Century 21 Turner Brokers and the Rhoe B. Henderson Insurance Agency.
Carol Bremmer, former
Chautauqua Home Rehabilitation and Improvement Corporation grants writer,
worked on the grant with Jackson Center staff under a CHRIC program designed to
assist non-profit organizations.
ÔÔCarol Bremmer and CHRIC
donated much time to the Jackson Center through her grants writing help,ÕÕ said

History Professors
Will Take Part In Event Monday At Jackson Center
Two
history professors will participate as panelists as part of Joseph E. PersicoÕs
12:30 p.m. appearance Monday at the Robert H. Jackson Center.
The
event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Carl Cappa
Auditorium of the Jackson Center. The program is handicapped accessible from
the centerÕs Prendergast Avenue entrance.

the Holmberg Foundation Lecturer. His appearance is co-sponsored by the
Holmberg Foundation, the Robert S. Maytum Sr./Valley of Jamestown A.A.S.R. Fund
of the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, Harris Beach Attorneys, the DFT
Communications Community Betterment Fund of the Northern Chautauqua Community

Following PersicoÕs speech, professors Dr. Don K. Rowney of Bowling Green State
University and Dr. Robert Seddig of Allegheny College will pose questions to
Persico. Audience members also will have the opportunity to speak with Persico.

delighted that the professors who have worked with the Jackson Center in
different capacities previously are willing to participate as panelists in this
program,ÕÕ said Gregory L. Peterson, Jackson Center president. ÔÔTheir
participation assures an objective look at Chief American Prosecutor and
Ôhometown guyÕ.ÕÕ

Rowney
is the Policy History graduate program director at Bowling Green State
University. A Fulbright scholar, Rowney has held many scholar-in-residencies in
various Russian and French institutions of higher learning in Moscow and Paris.
He received a Ford Foundation research grant, a National Endowment for the
Humanities Fellowship, a Cornell University visiting professorship and a
research fellowship with the USSR Academy of Sciences, Institute of the History
of the USSR. He has edited and written several books and articles. He organized
and co-sponsored with the Robert H. Jackson Center 60th anniversary
commemorative programs of the Nuremberg Trials at Bowling Green this spring.
Seddig
is the chair of the political science department of Allegheny College in
Meadville, Pa. A graduate of Princeton University, where he earned his masters
and doctoral degrees, Seddig studied German, government and economics in
undergraduate work at Carleton College. Seddig has served as both a University
and a Resident Fellow at Princeton and as a National Science Foundation Summer
Fellow. He received a lifetime appointment as a Danforth Fellow in 1971 and was
an American Bar Foundation Fellow in Legal History.
He is
has authored and edited numerous books and articles. Seddig participates in Jackson
Center programs by bringing students to the Jackson Center for programs.
