The Robert H. Jackson Center
Law Day performance featuring local middle school students in a mock-trial play
still has room for classes to attend at no charge.
The play is appropriate for
children in fifth through seventh grades. The event is set for 10 a.m.
Thursday, May 4, in the Carl Cappa Auditorium of the Jackson Center.
Reservations by teachers may be made to the Jackson Center by contacting Carol
Drake or Becky Robbins at 716-483-6646.
According to Robert
Terreberry, retired teacher and Jackson Center Education Committee volunteer
who is directing the play, the theme of Law Day is The American Jury: We the
People in Action. The event will be an interactive jury experience. Audience
members and some planted actors will join the student actors in the play.
Former state Supreme Court
Justice Joseph Gerace is cochairing the event with Terreberry. Co-sponsors of
the event are the law firms of Bly, Sheffield, Bargar & Pillitieri; and
Fessenden Laumer and DeAngelo. The Stanley A. Weeks/Robert H. Jackson Fund and
the John Sember/Robert H. Jackson Center Law Day Fund of the Chautauqua Region
Community Foundation also gave financial assistance for the program.
Terrebery said the
originator of Law Day at the Jackson Center was Sember, a retired middle school
social studies teacher who took great interest and pride in the centerÕs
offerings for students.
ÔÔJohn involved many people
in our 2004 and 2005 Law Day presentations and encouraged Judge Gerace and me,
among others, in our efforts to educate students through theatre. The late
Linda Taylor worked extremely hard with Mr. Sember and in presenting plays with
students for students for Law Day at the Jackson Center,ÕÕ Terreberry said.
The Jamestown Bar
Association adds to Law Day by providing local attorneys in classrooms to discuss
law-related topics with children. Teachers who want to have an attorney appear
in their classroom should call Kenneth Lasker, attorney, at 716-488-3090.
For more information, call
the Jackson Center at 716-483-6646.

Law Day Events
By The Post-Journal Staff
A capacity crowd is
expected for Law Day activities at 10 a.m. today in the Robert H. Jackson
CenterÕs Carl Cappa Auditorium.
Local middle
school students will participate in a mock trial play, acting before an
audience of third- through eighth-graders. Pupil actors include Kellen Fiore,
Ryan Salemme, Patrick Salemme, Chad Muscarella, Courtney Abbott, Lynnsey Olson,
Haley Kulakowski, Maria Sena and Bradley Anderson.
Robert
Terreberry, Jackson Center Education Committee volunteer who is directing the
play, credits the Hon. Judge Joseph Gerace and local attorney Kenneth Lasker
with coaching the children in the play about the American jury system. Sponsors
include the law firms of Bly, Sheffield, Bargar & Pillitieri; and Fessenden
Laumer and DeAngelo.
Two Chautauqua Region Community Foundation funds,
including the Stanley A. Weeks/Robert H. Jackson Fund and the John
Sember/Robert H. Jackson Center Law Day Fund, are also being used to pay for
the play. John Sember, a retired middle school teacher and originator of Law
Day events for children at
the Jackson Center, died
about a year ago, and friends contributed to create the fund in his name to
assist with future Law Day programs.
ÔÔWe remember so well the work of John and the late
Linda Taylor, both of whom engaged Bob Terreberry in Law Day planning,ÕÕ said
Greg Peterson, Jackson Center president. ÔÔWe owe huge thanks to Bob Terreberry
for picking up the ball this year and last year in creating a quality Law Day
educational event for our area children. The Jackson Center also thanks the
Hon. Joseph Gerace and attorney Ken Lasker for helping Bob in this effort. The
sponsors assisting with the dayÕs event are invaluable as well.ÕÕ
The Jamestown Bar Association also will provide
local attorneys to appear in classrooms in May to discuss law-related topics as
part of its educational work. Teachers who want to have an attorney appear in their
classrooms should call Lasker at 488-3090.
