“That four great nations, flushed with victory and stung with injury stay the hand of vengeance and voluntarily submit their captive enemies to the judgment of the law is one of the most significant tributes that Power has ever paid to Reason.” — from Jackson's Opening Statement before the International Military Tribunal

ROBERT H. JACKSON: New Deal Lawyer, Supreme Court Justice, Nuremberg Prosecutor

ROBERT H. JACKSON: New Deal Lawyer, Supreme Court Justice, Nuremberg Prosecutor is the engaging biography of Robert H. Jackson written by award-winning author Gail Jarrow and published by Calkins Creek/Boyds Mills Press.

The book details the journey of Justice Jackson from his birth in rural Pennsylvania and his childhood in western New York through his rise to become a valued member of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal inner circle during the Great Depression; United States attorney general while the nation prepared for World War II; associate justice of the United States Supreme Court when it ruled on significant cases such as Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka; and United States chief prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trial following World War II.

Ms. Jarrow used primary sources including Jackson’s papers in the Library of Congress and materials from the Jackson Center to tell the fascinating story of our man Jackson, who despite never attending college or earning a law degree, became a prominent lawyer and judge dedicated to the rule of law.

The book, which is filled with facts and photos, is appropriate for readers ages 10 and up and for grades 5 and up. It will serve a major role in advancing the Jackson legacy for years to come as we carry forth our mission with special emphasis on educating youth. The book, which is now available at the Jackson Center and other outlets, is one of the 2008 selections for the CLSC’s Young Readers Program at the Chautauqua Institution and for the Jamestown-area’s Big Read program.

Jarrow, a graduate of Duke University and Dartmouth College, is the author of novels, nonfiction books, and magazine articles and stories for readers age 8 through 18. Her children’s books have received awards from the American Booksellers Association, American Library Association, National Science Teachers Association and the Children’s Book Council, Public Library Association, the Society of School Librarians International, Scientific American, and Natural History magazine.
